GREENWOOD CRANK JJP 27C

Our farm is located 22 miles southwest of Beaverlodge or 6 miles west of Rio Grande, along the Red Willow River Valley and the beginning of the Foothills into the Rockies.

Anna and I purchased our place in 2004. We have 3 children; twin 17 year old boys, Tyler and Wyatt, and their younger sister Faith who is 11. The kids participate in a lot of sports and activities as well as help out greatly on the farm.

Building our Herd!

In 2007 we decided to sell our commercial cattle herd because of the low prices, BSE and the bleak outlook of the cattle industry. We spent the next year working up old pastures and rebuilding fences. In 2009 we had a chance to purchase 20 pairs from Steve and Hazel Tofteland of Double D Angus as they were wanting to slow down. Knowing that the Tofteland’s had some of the nicest Angus cattle in the Peace Country it was a perfect starting point for our new Angus herd.

Since then we have added to our herd through our own heifer retention and also purchasing females from some of the best herds in Western Canada. We have purchased cows from LLB Angus, Hamilton Farms, Southland Angus and Lonestar Angus. Last year we bought 10 cows from the Ring Creek Farms dispersal in Fairview; these cattle were all sired by HF Tiger or HF El Tigre and are real herd improvers. Pat and Len Friedel did a wonderful job!

AI and Genetics

A few years ago Anna went to Genex in Billings, Montana and attended their AI and Genetics course and now she ai’s most of our cows. With our AI program we can use genetics from some of the best Angus bulls in the industry.

The Future of Rio Grande Angus

This summer we will be breeding 110 head and will sell all of our bulls off the farm. In the future we would like to have a Spring bull sale as our herd grows. Our goal is to produce cows with great udders who are good milk producers and easy to handle and high quality bulls that work well for cattle producers.
